How To “Custom Shop” Your Squier
A few weeks ago, we shot out 5 levels of Jazzmasters, and I thought that the Squier Classic Vibe was a lot of guitar for the money. So, we decided to "Custom Shop" the Squier with some upgraded parts, some tricks from Ben at Big House, and a good setup, to see how close we could get to the real thing.
Huge thanks to Ben and all the crew at Big House Guitars for helping me out with this one, definitely check them out if you're in the Atlanta area

How To Find The "Right" Chords On Guitar
The second sounded more like the stock ts. First one sounded more organic like it’d been fixed. I agree with not liking the tone of the ts.
What a smooth operator.
i only use that producer today ,they ae top or leader at e-violin e-pioano as divers piano drums are rlatabel as guitar. its almost the old scool 50-2000 guitar sceen tha shows me ther fender as tube amp that im happy to leav behoind...
i always tune up, i never back off the tuning peg and leave it i always go flat then crank it up to pitch to leave tension on the string
If no hard case. The guitar stays at home
Joke's on the Tube Screamers; I don't use tubes. 😂
I love mine! It has an 808 mod!!🥰
It’s important to actually put time in to knowing a piece of gear too. I think we guitarists often dismiss amps etc too quickly because we didn’t take the time to learn its nuances. I had a peavey for years and could usually get what I needed from it, until I had a few quid to buy a tube amp, but I’ve since sold that and gone to a jazz chorus! Because it fits my current needs
words of wisdom, great tips!
Same reason I don't drink from lead pipes
The stock one sounded better than the modified one to be honest.
I hate tube screamers I have an SD 1 I want to mod Don’t know which mod to do
Larry Carlton claims that the 335 is the most versatile….🤷🏻♂️
I still am convinced, that the "one wrap over - two wraps under" the peg hole clamps the string even more, close to a locking machine. Helped a lot on Gibson 3/3 headstocks, esp. the Custom types, that are even wider. And I don't use harmonics to intonate a guitar, but always the fetted note at the 12th fret, With harmonics, the fretted note always goes a tiny bit sharp.
Soldanos have always been killer, but because they got associated with uber high gain, they’ve not gotten the respect they deserve (or the profiling) for their stellar clean and lighter OD sounds, which are sone if the best.
I have a guitar that I keep in C# with flats on it, and I play that probably 80% of the time, it's just got a vibe to it that you can't get any other way
Funny how few musicians can play music from the era in which the guitar was made
Thanks to Rhett and the channel for keeping up on what's new and bringing it to us in these videos. "Discovering" Mk.gee through here is still a highlight of my musical year, so far (and that is with Mark Knopfler, Ride, Slowdive, and others having new albums out).
@Tyler Bryant is going to be a legend😊
Whatcha drinking there, Mr. Shull? Is that a quadruple rye, neat?
trying telling that to Matteo Mancuso
I didn't mind the pickups in my Classic Vibe, though they seemed different compared to the first CV Jazzmaster I tried (returned it, got a different colour). That said, I would never spend custom shop money on any guitar. I'd import from Japan again, in a heartbeat. Way more value for your money, there. But sticking to domestic options, I'd go with the CV and upgrades.
Thank you for making this video for us
Davy Knowles comes to mind, a few times anyways.
I “absolutely hate” Les Pauls that are played by UA-camrs. My friend modded one that changed my mind. Let me know what you think in the comments. 😂
Modded sounded muddier lmao
Peavey’s rock
Muddy?? They literally prevent that. Nice try selling your buddies pedal though
Doesn’t like tube screamers, has thousand of dollars of tube screamer clones. Take his advice.
maxon od808 into a slightly overdriven marshall though 👌
Couch guitar. Since I started playing in1961 I have never played guitar while sitting on a couch. Never.
these both sound bad
Rhett no slouch either!
stock ts9 aren't muddy. They are wooley in the mids.
5:19 almost sounds like he's playing Link Wray's Rumble. A fitting track for sure lol
This actually made me understand how the CAGED box shapes work together. Missed that in all the CAGED instructions I've seen over the last couple years.
Thank you for introducing me to the music of Mk.Gee (and by default, the songs of Dijon as well). This is an excellent video and after all these years, videos like this show you’re still curious and excited by artists who want to push the guitar in new directions.
Yeah I bought one and I couldn’t for the life of me use it in a way that works for the sound I like, not sure if I should sell it or keep tweaking with it here and there
Most of skynyrd played peavys. I know live they did. The band got endorsed by Marshall and they provided them with some amps for the road. Gary hated how they sounded so he gutted some of the Marshall’s and stuffed peavy internals in them. Or would just have a Marshall head on stage, not turned on and behind it would be a peavy mic’d up
Had a classic 15 tweed combo from the early 90s. Had one of the best out of the box Texas blues SRV tones I have ever heard. Had a classic 30 that didn’t have the same mojo. That 15 was magic.
Strat, d standard, 11s 👍
I have never seen anything like that before and the Kashmir rendition was off the hook!😮
Then you don’t know tones!!!
idk...ZZ Top 'Eliminator' sounds pretty good to me. I can name 50 more great albums with lots of heavy distortion.. It all depends on the music.. There's no one rule fits all.
Well D, to me, is a very amicable key for performing. It just lends itself to my voice having very easy access to an octave and a half (dodgy to a high D), and easily reach to C .. maybe B (dodgy access to a low A). You can modulate to G which is a really friendly key as well (basically E minor), meaning harmonicas usually play well be they C or G. I don't like C that much because if I go below B, it makes it hard for me to shift up and I loose what little power I have, also I can at best reach a high Eb which is not so good for that key. And I end up working a lot in my break which sucks. But D, man all chords are comfy and open strings lend themselves for soloing. And E... Is good for the guitar but requires good planning and pacing for the vocals since you are sitting kinda high (absolute respect for Rob and Bruce to sit so comfy there). Plus if your guitar has 21 frets, you can't reach a seventh to increase tension before lowering (let alone the high E for a climactic end statement) I tend to approach this key using drop D, standard tuning or open G though. So ... Certainly worth exploring this. Wonder if you use slightly heavier string gages and intonate your guitar for it. Do you mix with standard and/or Drop D tuning? Do you not worry about accessing higher notes?
It's technically an "overdrive", but the ColorSound Power Boost circuit with maxed out gain has rapidly become my favorite fuzz tone. It's grindy and gnarly with an actually usable Baxandall EQ. Hell, roll the gain knob back (or your guitar's volume knob) and the clean sound is so chimney and thick. All y'all wannabe Gilmour out there, the Alembic FB-1 is *not* the Gilmour "secret ingredient"; the Power Boost is.
No wonder it sounds like crap, you're NOT using it correctly 😂😂😂 You need an amp already "cooking" with gain THEN you add the TS pedal, AND with the settings of Level/Volume on 10, Gain on ZERO, Tone to taste! Anything else, is just misusing the pedal 😂😂
It,says clok,on the box,by the way,glorious pedalbord.❤❤❤the intro.
I got the Classic Vibe Jaguar and Jazzmasters a couple years ago, because I couldn't decide which I wanted. As soon as I played the Jazzmaster, the Jaguar just sat collecting dust. I sold it, and imported a Japanese Traditional 60s Jazzmaster, and it's AMAZING! I did have to change pickups and the bridge, but even with that, it still cost less than the Vintera. I now have three Jazzmasters, and all my other guitars just sit there, unplayed. I gotta sell them at some point, I guess.
I just bought one of the newer Marshall 1959HWBM Bernie Marsden Limited Edition of 120 pieces. It’s covered in White Snakeskin Tolex w/Purple piping, a lavender light on the panel, and the original rectangular Marshall Logo on the front. It features a small plate on the back with the number of the amp and Bernie Marsden’s signature. Mine is 32/120. I also bought the matching cabinet which is a Marshall 1936 2-12 cab loaded with 2 Celestion Vintage 30’s. It is a fitting tribute to one of my favorite guitarists and sounds great w/my R9 or one of my vintage RI Strats! Interestingly enough, the first Marshall I ever played through was my ‘67 Gibson SG Special through a Marshall Plexiglass w/an 8-10 Cab in 1968. It melted my cheap white coiled guitar cord at the input… it was LOUD! Did I need this plexi? No, but it’s the coolest amp in the city! Love your channel! I also have a 30th Anniversary 6101 w/the Ext. cab. It’s loaded w/EVM 12’s…
